On My Mind: A Little Digital Detox
Ever notice how your phone, TV, and computer are like tiny little bosses, constantly demanding your attention? Some Sundays, I like to tell them, “Not today!” It may be time to take your power back and be the boss.
Step 1: Give Your Phone a Vacation
Part of my Sunday ritual is simple: turn the ringer off and leave my phone in another room. Just like that—out of sight, out of mind—for anywhere from 4 to 8 hours. The result? A surprisingly calm mind, a lighter body, and a little extra space for creativity, home tasks, projects (or a nap — no judgment).
Mini Tip: Start small. Even 30 minutes away from your phone can feel like a mini brain spa. Slowly stretch the time until it feels natural.
Step 2: Trim the TV Time
I’ve been shortening the time I spend in front of the TV incrementally. Just a few minutes less here and there can open up space for reading, moving my body, or simply staring out the window—activities that leave you feeling refreshed rather than drained.
Step 3: Pause Before You Respond
Texts, emails, and notifications don’t need immediate answers. I experiment with letting messages sit for a bit before responding. This tiny pause transforms reacting into responding—and trust me, your brain loves it.
Mini Tip: Try creating physical distance between your body and your devices. The farther away they are, the freer your mind feels.
Step 4: Notice the Benefits
Digital reduction isn’t about deprivation—it’s about connection. Connection to your own rhythm, your body, your thoughts, and even your spirit. Over time, you’ll notice calmer energy, a clearer mind, and more presence in your day.
So, try it. Start small. Experiment. And maybe leave your phone in the other room—you might just like what you find when the world is quiet for a little while.
